Aaron S. Moore, Legacies of Japanese Engineering in Northeast China
Dr. Aaron S. Moore, Associate Professor of Japanese History in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies is an 2016 A.T. Steele awardee for his work Legacies of Japanese Engineering in Northeast China. In this collaborative research project, Dr. Moore will investigate the legacies of the Japanese colonial economic order in Northeast Asia (Japan, Korea, and Manchukuo) for the formation of the socialist economic order in Northeast Asia linking North Korea, Northeast China, and the Soviet Far East after 1945. By visiting Japanese-built infrastructure sites in Northeast Chiba, interviewing Chinese experts, and investigating Chinese archives on early industrialization, the project will reveal some of the continuities and discontinuities between Japan’s vast industrial legacy, and the establishment of a socialist economic order in Northeast Asia, which shaped the histories of these nations’ economies, societies, and environments in many important ways.
