Graduate Certificate Program

The Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies will provide students with official transcript recognition of specialization in Asian Studies related to their major area of study. The certificate is offered in two tracks: East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam). This certificate is open to any student pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in any school or division of the university or non-degree seeking students.

Requirements

18 credits distributed among a Language Requirement, Core Course Requirement, and Electives, plus a capstone experience.

Language Requirement 6 credits

Two courses at the 400 level or above in one Asian language. (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian.)

Core Courses 6 credits

Two courses at the 500 level or above dealing with Asia from any one discipline chosen from an approved list of courses from all major disciplines in which ASU offers a graduate degree. Courses from the department in which the student is earning a graduate degree may be used to satisfy this requirement.

Electives 6 credits

Two courses at the 500 level or above dealing with Asia from an approved list of courses in areas other than the area that was used to satisfy the Core Course requirement.

Capstone experience 3-6 credits

To be determined in consultation with the Academic Advisor at the Center for Asian Research:

  • Option 1: One semester of overseas work or study experience in Asia within the past 4 years
  • Option 2: A U.S.-based internship dealing with Asia
  • Option 3: A research paper on an Asian-related topic
  • Option 4: An applied project dealing with an Asian-related topic
  • Option 5: A thesis or dissertation dealing with an Asian-related topic

How do I sign up for the certificate program?

First, set up an appointment, via phone or e-mail, with the Center for Asian Research Director, Juliane Schober, J.Schober@asu.edu. When you come for your appointment, be sure to bring:

  • a copy of your transcripts
  • a completed sign-up form which can be downloaded below.

Note: you cannot register for courses though the Center for Asian Research. Actual courses are run by the respective departments, and registration is done through the ASU Office of the Registrar.
