Our Mission

The Asia Center at ASU was established by the Arizona Board of Regents in 1966 and serves as a research and teaching hub for faculty and students engaged in the study of East, South, and Southeast Asia. Our internationally renowned faculty affiliates represent a wide array of disciplinary approaches and research interests, including literary and cultural studies, linguistics, history, anthropology, sociology, art history, film and media studies, political science, and international development, among other fields.
In keeping with ASU’s design aspirations, the Asia Center is committed to enabling student success, community engagement, and the leveraging of place in our initiatives and programming. In recent years, the Asia Center has received support and funding through prestigious grants from the Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others, and our students have gone on to careers in a variety of fields, including academia, government service, law, industry, and finance. The Asia Center is committed to exploring, developing, and maintaining connections between Asia and Arizona, and providing opportunities for students and faculty to engage in research and study abroad. The Asia Center supports undergraduate and graduate students through awards such as the Sage Family Scholarship and the Guilford M. Dudley Memorial Prize, and enables faculty development and travel through our A.T. Steele grants.
The Asia Center promotes the study of Asia through a broad array of university- and public-facing programming, including lectures, student presentations, film screenings, and digital archives. Annual events such as the Aaron Stephen Moore Endowed Lecture provide opportunities to invite internationally renowned scholars to ASU and establish partnerships with other institutions. If you are not already part of our mailing list, please register at [email protected] to stay informed about upcoming programming.
In the coming months, we will be renovating our website to better ensure that our affiliates’ cutting-edge research reaches as wide and diverse an audience as possible. If you are interested in presenting your current project or participating in our podcast series, blog, or other forums, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
